Meet... Nancy Vande Reyd
How would you best describe your job?
As an HR officer or possibly better known as a personnel officer, I am responsible along with the HR manager for managing every aspect of the employment process, including the orientation and training of new staff members. Another very important part of my job is payroll management, ensuring that all employees receive their salary on time and correctly. Overall, you could say that my job is somewhat repetitive but still contains enough variation.
What qualifications do you think are needed to perform the job well?
Anyone who is eager to learn and has an interest in personnel matters can become an excellent HR officer. Professional bachelor's degrees include subjects such as applied psychology and business sciences. However, there are also other programs, such as social work with a specialization in personnel work, that enable one to work in the HR sector.
In my opinion and expertise, a competent HR officer should possess the following qualities and skills:
- Be strong administratively and communicatively
- Have knowledge of personnel affairs and labor law
- Work accurately and pay attention to details
- Have the ability to work well with others
- Have the ability to monitor one's own performance and that of colleagues
What makes your workday a perfect/successful day?
This depends on various factors; one working day is not like another.
Throughout the day, attention is fragmented, which is why it is important not to want to achieve too many goals per day. A workday is successful for me when I have managed to complete and realize a limited number of goals. A concrete example of this is when an onboarding session with a new employee was scheduled and could be carried out properly.
How would your colleagues describe you?
My colleagues describe me as the group's listener.
In my position, I am also Algeco's internal confidant, because I know the company, the culture, and the employees, and by nature, I am the point of contact for questions and problems.
Specifically, this means that when a colleague needs a confidential conversation, he/she can come to me, or when professional help is needed, I connect them with carefully selected agencies.
My motto: "Stay true to yourself and don't be led by others."
Which department would you like to work in someday?
If I really had to choose, I would go for a day in the life of the colleagues who organize the entire Supply Chain & Procurement. Their main task is to ensure that we have the requested goods and services available at the right time. This naturally presents quite a challenge, as they must execute this without loss of quality and with the most cost-efficient process possible. Supporting this process in a support function seems to me to be a varied role where you are in contact with both suppliers and your own colleagues.
What tip would you like to give to the reader?
My ultimate learning tip is not to rush to judgment about others. First, open yourself up to getting to know someone and give him or her the chance to develop professionally.
What does Algeco mean to you?
Meanwhile, I have been working at Algeco Belgium for over 11 years, so I can say that it is an excellent employer. Good employment practices consist of various components; there are clear agreements in the law regarding certain matters, such as employment conditions.
But good employment practices also refer to aspects that the law does not address, such as a team lunch or a Christmas drink for all colleagues.
